- The reason you are punctillious about turning your computer off
- _and_ pulling the plugs ( modem too ) out of the wall is so that
- it will not get damaged by lightening or a similar mains surge.

- I have had damaged:- A pdp-11, a printer serial card ( rs-232 ), a cd player,
- and an ordinary TV. Thank goodness, with the exception of the pdp-11 -
- it was too old to bother about, but I did have a silent tear for an
- old friend - I managed to get everything repaired.

- On the other hand electronic components definately like to be held
- at a constant temperature. The thermal expansion movements tend to
- undo the bonding in the chips.
